BYD Song Pro DM-i costs US$13,000 more in Mexico than China, for the PHEV SUV
It was reported on September 3 that the BYD Song Pro DM-i had entered the Mexican market. In Mexico, the compact SUV is only available in one PHEV configuration priced at 599,880 pesos (30,200 USD).
The version available in Mexico has a 71 km all-electric range and is equivalent to the Beyond edition in China, which is priced at 122,800 yuan (17,200 USD). It should be noted that in China, the Song Pro DM-i is available in five versions priced between 109,800 yuan and 139,800 yuan (15,400–19,650 USD). That makes the car 13,000 USD more expensive in Mexico than in China.
For the Mexican market, the Song Pro DM-I comes with a 12.8-inch rotatable central infotainment screen that includes a 360-degree surround camera function. The car also gains tire pressure monitoring and features ESP stability control, hill start assist, and full-speed adaptive cruise control.
The BYD Song Pro DM-i measures in at 4738, 1680, and 1710 mm while having a wheelbase of 2712 mm. It should be noted that the Song Pro has yet to get the fifth generation BYD PHEV system, DM 5.0. The older system, as used in the Mexican edition, is still centered around a 1.5 liter naturally aspirated engine. Maximum power for the engine is 81 kW and it is coupled with an electric motor that can produce up to 145 kW. The car has a 13.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate blade battery from BYD subsidiary FinDreams. This can provide the car with up to 71 km all-electric NEDC range. It should be noted that in China there is also a version with an 18.3 kWh battery pack available with an all-electric range of 110 Km, however this is currently not offered in Mexico.
The Song Pro should be in line for the new DM 5.0 PHEV technology soon, and has been spotted testing. When this happens, the Song Pro will receive a lower powered 74 kW 1.5 liter engine based fifth generation PHEV system. Although the DM 5.0 technology uses the less powerful 1.5 liter engine, this has so far been coupled with more powerful electric motors, and so the DM 5.0 powered Song Pro has a 160KW motor. It will have greatly increased comprehensive cruising range and reduced fuel consumption thanks to the DM 5.0 technology. It seems a little strange that the Song Pro is being launched in Mexico with the old generation PHEV system with the new generation about to launch in China.
